WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT
Have you ever wondered why sleep is important to your overall health? Sleep is a very important part of our daily human existence. It plays a very important role in our well-being and overall health.
However, many of us are becoming unmindful about the importance of sleep because of many factors affecting us in our daily lives.
In this article, I would like to remind everyone about the importance of sleep and how it affects our health, life, and the people around us.
Importance of Sleep – Why Sleep is Important
Sleep is vital and plays a significant part in our physical health. Sleep is important because it allows our body to regain energy to be ready for the next day. Proper sleep helps our body to stay healthy and keep away from sickness. Having no enough sleep can give us short- or long-term health problems. When you lack sleep, your brain becomes less efficient and affects your memory processing, ability to think properly and focus.
However, due to our busy day-to-day life, many of us tend to neglect sleep. You might be still in school or a busy professional, but your attitude towards proper sleep time becomes very careless when you found yourself piled up with things to do and deadlines are arising.
So, what happens when you continuously don’t get enough sleep that your body needs?
Here are the things that may happen to you:
• Stressful Day — When we did not get enough sleep, our brain will not function properly. So, the rest of the things that we do definitely affected us negatively. Many studies have proven that a person who sleeps well has a better happy day than the one who stays awake the whole night.
• Bad Mood — Our mood is always linked to our sleep habits. We cannot deny that all of us experienced bad mood days when we did not get enough sleep the night before. We become very irritable even on minor things that we find wrong.
• Poor Focus and Concentration — When we did not have enough sleep, our brain’s ability to pay attention is largely affected. Simple tasks can be very difficult to do when your brain loses focus.
Aside from short-term effects, continuous lack of sleep most likely increases the risk of heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease. This can also cause excess weight gain and prolonged illness.
On the other hand, if we embrace the significance of adequate sleep in our everyday life, we could live with a lot of great health benefits.
• Better efficiency and attentiveness
• Stronger immune system
• Reduced risk of heart diseases
• Healthier Physical body fitness
• Good Emotional and social intelligence
• Faster metabolism and calorie regulation
• Very low risk of depression
What are the Signs of Excessive Sleepiness?
In general, it is normal for us to feel sleepy, especially after a long tiring day. However, excessive sleepiness can negatively affect our regular routine and daily activities. Also, some people who are having an excessive sleep may have other sleep disorders due to other health conditions.
Excessive sleepiness for some people can be a relatively common degree. However, it can be hard to measure in some cases because it might mean different to different people. Hence, there could be different possible causes of excessive sleepiness of the people individually.
We can start to be conscious that we may have excessive sleepiness if we come to experience the following signs:
• Delays in attention
• Difficulty in focus
• Irritable behavior
• Hard to wake up or get out of your bed in the morning
• Feeling of grogginess or unmotivated
• Taking nap more frequent throughout the day
• Loss of appetite
• Memory problems
• Poor performance on work
People may also experience more symptoms if their other underlying conditions cause their excessive sleepiness.
Amount of Sleep Needed
People’s amount of sleep needs to change over the years. It depends on age and varies from person individually.
Here are the general guidelines that we can consider in regard to the amount of sleep needed which varies significantly among age groups:
• Newborns from 0 to 3 months — 14 to 17 hours
• Infants from 4 to 11 months — 12 to 15 hours
• Toddlers from 1 to 2 years — 11 to 14 hours
• Preschoolers from 3 to 5 years — 10 to 13 hours
• School-aged child from 6 to 13 years — 9 to11 hours
• Teenagers from 14 to 17 years — 8 to 10 hours
• Young adults from 18 to 25 years — 7 to 9 hours
• Adults from 26 to 64 years — 7 to 9 hours
• Older adults from 65 years and older — 7 to 8 hours

What Causes Sleep Problems?
Many factors can contribute to the progression of Insomnia or sleep disorder in a person, and it may also vary differently from one person to another. It can be physiological, psychological, or environmental factors.
In some cases, sleep problems can also be associated with other health conditions of a certain individual.
Here are the common causes of insomnia or sleep disorders:
• Poor Sleep habits and Unhealthy lifestyle — This happens if you have an irregular sleep schedule, stressful activities before bed, and a non-friendly sleeping environment. Another not-so-good habit is when you do your work in bed, watch and eat on a bed, play video games, and on smartphones. All of this is affecting your sleep cycle.
• Stress, Anxiety, and Depression — Stressful life caused by problems at work, school, personal life, relationships, finances, and family problems are very disruptive and can give us difficulty sleep.
• Taking medications and other substances — Some medications can also cause you insomnia, like antidepressants and other medicines for allergy or hypertension.
• Medical condition — health conditions like cancer, chronic pain, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, and other heart diseases can also cause disruptive sleep.
Many people experience sleep problems due to other factors like sleep routines, taking too much caffeine and alcohol, change in routine activities, mental disorders, bad eating habits, hormone imbalances, neurological disorders, and other changes in the body or environment.
Summing Up – Why Sleep is Important
all the above information, I conclude that having deprived of enough sleep that our body needs can really cause a lot of problems in our everyday life. Sleep is very important for our body as a human being. So, let us start to analyze our own sleep habits and fix whatever is not right. I choose to live healthy and happy, and so do you!
